rdscott450 I've been listening to this recording almost nonstop since receiving it. After reading the liner notes from Jeff Smith, I was stunned to find out that this was such a recent release.
The music sounds so classic and timeless, I couldn't believe that it had just been released this year! I've heard many of the songs before, and enjoyed seeing The Hickoids before - and this is a beautiful time capsule.
If you like any of the songs, or the artists, or rock & roll, check it out! - Robert Scott

about

You've heard me gush about Danny Grace aka Frontier Dan for some while now. I met Danny (a college chum of Davy Jones') back in the mid-80's when his band The Rockin' Guys hosted the Hickoids for a number of shows in Little Rock. And, I have been promising to "make him a star" for the better part of a decade...but those who know him and have seen him perform know that he is one already.

Davy is gone of course but we feel his spirit whenever Danny joins us on stage. We decided to try and capture some of this magic in the studio over Memorial Day weekend 2019 in Memphis. Originally we wanted to record at Sun Studios but couldn't seem to do any better than the exorbitant hourly tourist or "sucker rate" even after tapping some of my contacts from the time I spent living there in the 90's (next door to Sun incidentally.)

However, a hero came along in the form of Dale Watson who generously offered up his direct-to-mono tape facility, the impeccably named Wat-Sun Studio, free of charge. Austin good guy and friend Cris Burns flew in to engineer the session, Danny's brother David offered spiritual guidance and now a little over a year later it's seeing the light of day.

Recorded in one afternoon and without the benefit of any rehearsal it's unlike anything the Hickoids have previously released but I believe captures some of that spirit (and goofiness) referenced above. It contains eight fairly recognizable tunes (at least before we got hold of 'em) on the physical edition and nine on the digital including 'You're Gonna' Miss Me' serendipitously captured one week before Roky's passing, 'Green Door' (recorded before the release of 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood') and audience pleaser 'Glorious Heroin'. It's an imperfect ride that hopefully conveys the moment and the fun that we had making it.
